Shailoh Phillips - Critical Making
Media artist Shailoh Philips works along the cracks between different disciplines and organizations, aiming to enable people to tap into the creative and critical potential of the digital era. In this workshop, we will start by exploring a collection of historical organic and technological tools for action in peaceful protest movements, from barricades, blimps, potato protests to graffiti bots. Using simple circuit boards, small inflatables and organic conductive materials, we will prototype feedback loops and interventions in concrete situations of imbalanced power. What seems to be the 'natural' state of affairs can be transformed into an interface using the conductive properties of organic materials.

Shailoh Phillips
Shailoh Phillips (United States, 1979) is a researcher, educator and media artist. After studying anthropology and philosophy at the University of Amsterdam and the Humbolt Universität Berlin, she began work as a game designer, researcher and scenario writer for the VPRO. Last year she obtained a Master of Art Education from the Piet Zwart Instituut in Rotterdam. She is currently working for a PhD Arts at the University of Leiden in the Critical Making consortium on the potential and limitations of technology as a medium of social critique. She also teaches at the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam and The Design Academy in Eindhoven. She has previously worked at Bouwkeet Makerspace in Rotterdam, as media project leader at Pier K (2014-2017), as coordinator of the Medialab in the Rijksmuseum (2012-2014), and as innovation and new media project leader in the Kunstgebouw (2010-2012).

Thursday Bite
Before Thursday Night Live! you can grab a bite to eat with the speakers and staff of Het Nieuwe Instituut. At 18:00 Het Nieuwe Café will serve soup with bread or a quiche with salad. Dinner vouchers are available for ¬ 7,50 up to a day before the particular Thursday Night event via the Ticket link or at the bar this evening.
Het Nieuwe Instituut reserves the right to cancel or move the workshop if there are less than five applications.
