Back to the Future: On the role of scenarios in spatial planning
What purpose do spatial scenarios and other foresight studies serve in these times of significant spatial transitions? How can we optimally employ scenarios to foster dialogue with politicians and society about the future of the Netherlands? On Tuesday, 28 May, the PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, the Board of Government Advisors (CRa), the Deltametropolis Association and the Nieuwe Instituut are hosting a symposium focusing on the role of scenarios in spatial planning. Aligned with the exhibition Designing the Netherlands, we shall explore the rich tradition of scenarios in spatial planning and anticipate future developments.

The symposium commences at 13.30 with a keynote by Christian Salewski, author of the book Dutch New Worlds. This is followed by short presentations featuring case studies, such as The Netherlands Now as Design, the Spatial Outlook 2023 (PBL) and The Netherlands in 2120 (WUR). A panel discussion on the future of spatial planning scenarios concludes the symposium, moderated by Paul Gerretsen of the Deltametropolis Association.
