Het Nieuwe Instituut, EYE Filmmuseum and the Netherlands Film Fund have joined forces to curate the Dutch pavilion and offer Dutch design talent a podium during the Cannes Film Festival. Studio Sabine Marcelis responds to the centenary of De Stijl in the form of a spatial design that serves as a meeting place for the international film industry. The pavilion was awarded with a Special Jury Prize.

At the invitation of Het Nieuwe Instituut Studio Sabine Marcelis responds to a century of De Stijl and gives it shape in the form of a meeting place for the international film industry during the Cannes Film Festival. She combines her own work with the visual language of De Stijl artists like Piet Mondrian. The Dutch pavilion is curated by Marcelis with her own designs and designs by Martin Visser, Gerrit Rietveld and Radboud van Beekum. The collaboration with Studio Sabine Marcelis, EYE Filmmuseum and the Netherlands Film Fund characterises Het Nieuwe Instituut's ambition to provide an international stage for emerging designers, architects and makers.

A jury committee which consisted of chairman Pierre Lescure (President of the Festival de Cannes), Françoise Delbecq (journalist at Elle magazine), Dominique Vachon (former CEO of Vachon) and Charlie Baum (creator and event organizer) awarded the pavilion with the Special Jury Prize. Besides the Dutch Pavilion, also Switzerland and Latvia received an award for their pavilion.

A hundred years ago, the avant-garde magazine De Stijl was begun by painter, architect and poet Theo van Doesburg. The eponymous art movement, to which Piet Mondrian, Gerrit Rietveld and Bart van der Leck belonged, sought to radically reshape art and expressed it in abstract shapes and primary colours. The State Archive for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning contains records relating to De Stijl architects such as G. Th. Rietveld, J.J.P. Oud, Th. Van Doesburg, Jan Wils and C. van Eesteren. This year, hundreds of objects from the archive will be loaned to museum institutions for exhibitions celebrating the centenary anniversary of De Stijl. Het Nieuwe Instituut and Gemeentemuseum Den Haag are organising the exhibition: _Architecture and Interiors. The Desire for Style_.
