State of Strong Design

The past 25 years of architecture and urban planning policy have yielded a bountiful and colourful harvest. Compiled by the Office of the Government Architect, the exhibition brings together numerous projects that came about through the incentive policies and the patronage of the State. Moreover, the exhibition devotes ample attention to young talent, internationalisation, and developments in architectural education.

The 1991 policy paper Space for Architecture marked the start of a national architecture policy that would put Dutch architecture on the national and international map. At the end of 2016, the release of the Action Agenda for Architecture and Spatial Design 2017-2020. Working together on the strength of design prompted Government Architect Floris Alkemade to team up with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, to review the results of 25 years of promoting architecture and spatial design in the Netherlands.

In addition to presentations of visual material and passages from the 1992 Speech from the Throne, the exhibition includes filmed interviews with the Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment Melanie Schultz van Haegen, the Minister of Education, Culture and Science Jet Bussemaker, and the Government Architect Floris Alkemade, all of whom introduce their favourite project.

The exhibition State of Strong Design is on show from 10 January to 5 February 2017 in the foyer of Het Nieuwe Instituut. It will then travel to various cities, starting with Amsterdam (Arcam, February and March 2017).
