Preserving Practices: Materialities of Archiving

The Network Archives Design and Digital Culture Archives (NADD) and The Hmm are organising How to Archive Better: Preserving Practices, a four-part workshop series on digital archiving. The third session in this workshop series, Materialities of Archiving, focuses on the materiality of digital archiving, considering what it means to archive a website, an online project or a browser-based work.

15 January 2026 14:00 - 17:00

During this workshop, participants will explore digital archiving tools and processes and learn about decentralised, autonomous and self-hosted ways of archiving digital work. Digital archiving can often seem rather ephemeral, with projects, files and artworks stored on servers, external hard drives, and in the cloud. But is it safe to archive your work in the cloud or on external hard drive? What happens if the platform on which a work was originally created no longer exists? How can we collectively devise new ways of caring for digital work?

Location: Nieuwe Instituut | Tickets: €5 (onsite or online)

Tickets

This session begins with a talk by Kelani Nichole, a technologist and exhibition maker and the founder of TRANSFER, an experimental media art gallery. She has been exploring decentralised networks and virtual worlds in contemporary art for over a decade.

After the talk, Karl Moubarak and Heerko van der Kooij from the Hackers and Designers collective will lead a hands-on workshop. We will explore strategies for archiving web and code-based projects using digital archiving processes and tools.
