In the lecture "People, Place, Purpose", Francine Houben will present her body of work that has been based on these three fundamental elements. She will share the stories behind Mecanoo's high-profile designs that have been realised all over the world. Each project is carefully considered in terms of its cultural setting, place and time, amounting to a unique design statement embedded within its context and orchestrated specifically for the people who use it.
Francine Houben, creative director and founder of Mecanoo Architecten in Delft, leads the firm to success in The Netherlands and abroad. With Mecanoo she has amassed a portfolio of work that is wide-ranging, inspired by global challenges and with a sustainable view on society. Her work has received international acclaim, including a Stirling Prize nomination for the Library of Birmingham. Notable projects in The Netherlands include the Delft University of Technology Library, Montevideo in Rotterdam, Hilton Schiphol, and the train station and municipal offices in Delft. She currently leads the renovation of the Midtown Campus of the New York Public Library and the revitalisation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington DC.
