Opening Soengoe Kondre / Submerged Heritage
Nieuwe Instituut cordially invites you to the opening of the exhibition Soengoe Kondre / Submerged Heritage with an evening celebrating the rich culture of Surinamese maroon communities.
15 September 2023 16:30 - 20:00
In the exhibition, curator Vincent van Velsen reflects on the many stories surrounding the construction of the Afobaka dam in Suriname in 1964, and its far-reaching impact on the lives of maroon communities in the nearby Brokopondo district. The dam caused the flooding of an area the size of the province of Utrecht, forcing thousands of people to relocate, with maroon communities seeing parts of their identity and way of life disappear underwater. Van Velsen reconstructs the history surrounding the dam using personal memories, archive photographs, design drawings and films, including a new work by artist and film-maker Miguel Peres dos Santos.
On Friday 15 September, we celebrate the rich culture of Aukan and Saramakan maroons with music and space for discussion, all while enjoying maroon and Caribbean cuisine.
