About Plumbing the System
The official Dutch contribution in the Rietveld Pavilion was commissioned by the Nieuwe Instituut and curated by architect and researcher Jan Jongert / Superuse Studios. The pavilion will showcase The Waterworks of Money, a series of drawings by cartographer Carlijn Kingma which intricately translates the complex economic framework into a spatial environment using water as a metaphor. Zooming in, the pavilion then seeks to test a hypothesis of systemic change by implementing change on itself. Continuing with the metaphor of water – and given Venice’s current aquatic challenges – pavilion curator Jan Jongert installs a low-tech water retention system in the building, while documenting the process (and, inevitably, the challenges) of undertaking this seemingly simple task with the hope of offering lessons for enacting future change.
