Model Storage Open During Art Rotterdam
Visit the Open Model Storage of the Nieuwe Instituut, which will be open to the public during Art Rotterdam. Located on the site of the Van Nelle factory, the depot occupies one of the factory warehouses (Schiehallen) and is used to store around 700 models in an open layout. It is not normally open to the public.

It’s mainly the (extremely) large models that have been given a place here. There are, for example, the huge plaster competition models for a town hall in Rotterdam, and OMA’s model for the Two Libraries at Jussieu, which measures over a square metre and has a detailed interior. But there are also very small ones, such as Teun Verstand’s extremely fragile model made of eggshells, and Johan Kappetein’s open-work experimental space studies.
As well as being a storage area, the Open Model Storage is also a workshop for collection managers, who work on restoring and registering models here or preparing them for transport as loans. To make the space suitable for both functions, architects Broekbakema installed a 460 m2 climate-controlled box in the warehouse in 2005.
