Omnibus: Show Me the Money!

This edition of Omnibus introduces two new books that explore the impact of political-economic change in two specific contexts: Architecture and Retrenchment: Neoliberalization of the Swedish Model across Aesthetics and Space, 1968-1994 (Helena Mattsson, 2023) and The City in the City: Architecture and Change in London’s Financial District (Amy Thomas, 2023). The evening will be moderated by Reinhold Martin (Professor of Architecture, Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation).

Over the past decade, many writers have explored the impact of neoliberalism and global financial markets on architecture and urbanism – from policy to aesthetic invention to questions of value. Most of this work has emphasised generalisations rather than specific, concrete cases, taking the notion of ‘deregulation’ as a core idea that links changes in the style and forms of architecture, its professional structures, and changes in financial markets.

By exploring two unique geographical contexts, Omnibus: Show Me the Money! will add a fresh angle to the conversation about the ways in which cities and buildings changed to accommodate new economic models in the second half of the 20th century.
