NADD x interCHANGES: Digital Futures of Archiving

How can new tools and digital infrastructures help to link design archives, creating a shared design memory that eclipses national borders? What sources of knowledge and inspiration are available in archives, and how can we find them? And, what tools are available for archiving your own work? Explore these questions and more in this session on Digital Futures of Archiving, curated by the Network for Archives of Design and Digital Culture (NADD) in collaboration with interCHANGES at Dutch Design Week.

**Keynote Session: Archival Consciousness **

Archival Consciousness is initiated by artist Mariana Lanari and graphic designer Remco van Bladel. Together they investigate archiving methods in cultural institutes in combination with digital technologies, working in close collaboration with archivists to make archive collections more visible, accessible, and resilient. In this session, they will share their methods for using a Knowledge Graph to make the Dutch design field more visible, with information from the archives of NADD partners that manage collections on design and digital culture. The presentation will illustrate the full data life cycle, featuring examples that show the journey from the archives to the NADD, and to Wikidata, revealing the process of capturing, structuring, and sharing knowledge about makers and their archives within a broader digital network.

InterCHANGES break-out sessions

Session I - Speculative Futures of Design Archives Annemartine van Kesteren and the Archive Doctors

Look around you. Imagine if, in 50 years, there will be no trace of the work of the designers during DDW, or there will be fragmented parts that are impossible to find. What would we lose if we had no access to that knowledge? And, on the flip side, allow yourself to dream about what the ideal archives of the future could look like. How can we use design thinking to come up with creative solutions for preserving this vital heritage? Speculate on the futures of design archives in this interactive session with Annemartine van Kesteren and the Archive Doctors.

Session II - Collaborative Care for Digital Artworks with LI-MA

How can we work together to preserve digital artworks for future generations? And what does it really mean to preserve digital works when the technology is rapidly changing? In this short workshop session, Sanneke Huisman and Joost Dofferhoff introduce participants to tools for working with and preserving digital art, drawing on their experiences as a curator and conservator working with LI-MA’s vast collection of artworks as well as the collections of museums around the world. They will also introduce two projects that embody LI-MA’s approach to preservation: creating a collaborative infrastructure together with a network of museums and collectors; and sharing knowledge on digital care.

Session III - Mapping Design Networks with Linked Open Data

How can Wikidata provide new knowledge and resources for designers? In this one-hour workshop, dive into the world of Linked Open Data (LOD) and Wikidata with Hay Kranen and Bibi Bodegom. Learn how these powerful tools are being used to map our collective design memory, and gain practical skills in querying data to uncover insights about designers worldwide.

Session IV - Disquieting the Graphic Design Archive: A Sonic Re-Mapping of the Fre Cohen Archive

In this talk, Loma Doom (aka Femke Dekker) and Alice Twemlow present a work in progress that seeks to activate the archive of Dutch graphic designer Fre Cohen through a sonic mapping of aspects of her life and work in early 20th-century Amsterdam onto the lives and work of researchers in the city today and in the future.
