Museum Gym in Het Nieuwe Instituut
Museums and other cultural institutions must reopen as soon as possible. On Wednesday 19 January 2022, Het Nieuwe Instituut becomes a sports location for a day. As part of the national Museum Gym campaign, two of the institute's Detour Guides offer a mental booster. Teacher, DJ and former fitness instructor Nathalie Cijntje and artist and art teacher Joëlle Hoogendoorn lead fitness sessions on Wednesday afternoon in what we are calling Gym 1 for the day. Treat yourself to this free workout for mind, body and soul!

Museum Gym
The national Museum Gym campaign is an initiative of the Dutch Museum Association. With this playful action, the affiliated museums are calling for the sector to reopen as soon as possible.
This is what the association has to say about the initiative:
"With the reopening of shops and other non-essential services, the cabinet is giving society more breathing space. As we know, museums are not included in this reopening. That is and remains inexplicable. It undermines the principle of equality, the sense of reasonableness and solidarity. That is why the Museum Association is starting the Museum Gym campaign."
Visit museum.nl for a list of locations you can visit on Wednesday for your museum exercise. Sign the petition to reopen museums and cultural institutions and use the hashtags_ #MuseumGym_ and #OpenCulture if you mention the action on social media.
Designing the Social
The fitness sessions in our museum gym take place against the background of Designing the Social. This exhibition showcases the role that design and designers have played in imagining a different, better world.
"The question is always the same: how has design contributed to new worldviews, new forms of living, working and communication, and to a society in which we all have the means to shape our own ideas about the social?"
