Material Night: New Materials, New Values?
An evening that explores the economical, environmental, social and cultural implications of current material experiments, in order to grasp how choices made in the design process influence our value systems. Moderated by designer and critic Sophie Krier, the evening will focus on the shifting values, which are addressed -- and tested -- by, amongst others, nominees of the New Material Award 2014. Invited guests, among whom cognitive scientist Jelle van Dijk, will provide new perspectives on the discussion.
Karen Verschooren, Z33-curator of the exhibition Future Fictions, will give an introduction on three of the narratives used in the development of future (conceptual) visions by designers, architects and artists. Moderator Sophie Krier will further discuss this with Elisa van Joolen, New Material Award nominee, and Roos Meerman, winner of the New Material Fellow. Their projects are on view, along with the works of the other 14 nominees, in an exhibition that runs at Het Nieuwe Instituut until January 4th, 2015. The New Material Award is a collaboration of the DOEN Foundation, Materiaalfonds and Het Nieuwe Instituut.
