Material Night: Glass

An evening all about an age-old, man-made material that has long been associated with innovation and progress: glass. This 'Material Night' focused on how contemporary designers take up the challenge of glass and experiment with it. Moderator Lennart Booij hosted an evening with guests including designers from Atelier NL and Toon Koehorst and Jannetje in 't Veld, curators of the exhibition GLASS.

7 May 2015 20:00 - 22:00

Knowledge exchange between designers and scientists is nothing new, but remains a key issue for innovation. How can contemporary designers ensure they not only reap the benefits of collaborating with scientists, but play a fundamental role in inventing new products and processes? What light can an age-old, man-made material like glass throw on the subject?

Programme

  • Presentation PhD research
Short presentation on the PhD research of Lennart Booij in relation to the material glass and the continuous innovations this material brings about.

  • Atelier NL on their project Zandbank
The glass industry uses only pure, white sand for the manufacture of glass. This type of sand can only be found in a small number of sand quarries worldwide. With the project Zandbank, Atelier NL experiments with various local, non-pure types of sand. Sand types from different places produce different colours, patterns and textures. By melting sand in an oven it breaks down and hardens into crystalline patterns. Atelier NL is currently investigating the potential of these new materials

  • Pieke Bergmans en David Derksen
They will tell how design in relation to the material glass in its operation works and which innovative possibilities are possible. The Phenomeneon lamp Pieke Bergmans and the Dewar Lights and carafe series of David Derksen are currently shown in the exhibition GLASS. Engine of progress.

  • Curators Toon Koehorst and Jannetje in 't Veld
A preview by Toon Koehorst and Jannetje in 't Veld, the curators of the exhibition GLASS. Engine of progress. How do the topics raised at this event connect to the underlying concepts of the exhibition, and is glass still an innovative medium?
