Love Edition

14 February 2019 19:30 - 23:45

Sketch by architect P. Klaarhamer "Zoo zaten ze met zen beids te vrijen", 1897

Research fellow Natalie Dixon presents the performance-reading 'Senhora', exploring awkward love, arranged marriage and advertising for a wife. Leanne Wijnsma plays with the natural and commercial scent of love, Jason Gwen gives a performance and photographer Florine van Rees gives an inspirational workshop about the colour red. Especially for this evening Het Nieuwe Café will serve a Thursday Love Bite and finish with Ultimate Loving Beats!

Natalie Dixon

Dixon tells the story of women during post-war Europe who left Portugal to seek love and a better life in "Africa" -- using her Portuguese family photo archive as a narrative starting point. Senhora forms part of a series of performance-readings, and is part of Het Nieuwe Instituut's ongoing program on the theme of Burn-out.

Natalie Dixon is the co-founder of Affect Lab, an Amsterdam-based research studio that examines our relationship with technology. Her key focus is on the emotional aspects of communication technologies within marginalized and vulnerable communities. Most recently Natalie has researched the role of mobile communication in resisting instances of shaming and Othering during the European refugee crisis. Her published work investigates how feelings of alienation and belonging are created through a neighbourhood WhatsApp group in South Africa. Natalie is a doctoral candidate in media and communications at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
