NN North Sea Jazz Festival and North Sea Round Town present a particularly badass and beautiful performance by singer Lisa Fischer and pianist Taylor Eigsti at The Podium. The two Grammy-winning New Yorkers have extensive careers as session and backing musicians, but in the past few years, they have been stepping into the solo spotlight and as a duo since 2017. Fischer and Eigsti first performed as a duo at the 2017 Stanford Jazz Festival. The first two of those songs literally and figuratively resonated so much with the audience and the performers that they decided to collaborate on a full-length programme. The show they went on tour with varies from intimate soul-touching moments to formidable vocal displays; badass and beautiful, indeed.
Lisa Fischer was featured as the backing singer in the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom, a tribute to the passion and commitment of the musicians who stand a few feet behind the stars on stage. 'I distance myself from the idea that the job at which you excel isn't good enough to pursue,' she says in the film about the backing singer job. 'Some people go out of their way to be famous, but I just want to sing.' Having spent decades singing along with icons such as Luther Vandross, The Rolling Stones, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner and Nine Inch Nails, Fischer's impressive range has made her a formidable force in soul, jazz, rock and classical singing.
Pianist and composer Taylor Eigsti is not averse to collaborations. He likes to share the fun and confidence he radiates in the recording studio and on stage with colleagues. At fifteen, 'prodigy' Eigsti was already a staff member of the Stanford Jazz Workshop at Stanford University. In addition to the eight studio records under his name, Eigsti has co-written and played on more than fifty albums of other artists.
