A new chance to borrow an EVJ bag
Designer Elisa van Joolen and the Nieuwe Instituut are working together again in 2024. From the end of May, the EVJ museum bag will be available once more: not a disposable carrier bag, but a handmade design object made from upcycled materials that you can take care of for a few months. The designer and the institute are celebrating the renewed collaboration with a modest launch, and you can sign the contract to become a bag “caretaker” right away. Why not adopt one this spring?

EVJ x Nieuwe Instituut 2024
The bags that you can adopt temporarily this year will be online on Wednesday 29 May at 20:00 on the special website evjbags.com. You can choose your favourite, sign a loan agreement using the online form, then pick up your choice from the lobby of the Nieuwe Instituut. Please note that you can only collect your chosen loan bag at one of the following three times:
- During the soft launch and opening of the installation on Thursday 30 May 2024, in the evening from 18:00;
- During the second pick-up moment on Sunday 9 June 2024, in the afternoon from 15:00 to 17:00;
- During the third pick-up moment and the closure of the installation on Sunday 23 June 2024, in the afternoon from 15:00 to 17:00.
Starting this spring, visitors and other users of the institute will again have the opportunity to actively and consciously engage with the value, responsibility and ownership of something as mundane as the bag you take with you after a museum visit. Can something seemingly worthless become valuable the moment it is entrusted to our care? “What does it mean,” asks Van Joolen, “to have to pay close attention to something that is not your own, and has no monetary value?”
