The Hmm @ 4 locations
The Hmm is hosting a decentralised event that takes place simultaneously at four locations in four provinces in the Netherlands. Eight speakers will join across the four locations, with two of those speakers physically present at Het Nieuwe Instituut and a live broadcast of the speakers at Waag (Amsterdam), Impakt (Utrecht) and MU (Eindhoven). During this evening we will investigate whether or not being together in one place is important in order to create a sense of togetherness.

Speakers at Het Nieuwe Instituut
On stage in Het Nieuwe Instituut, artists and designers Ying-Ting Shen and Yu-Ching Chiang will talk about their Enter Residency and journalist Süeda Isik (NRC) will talk about the growth of drug related meme accounts on social media.
Through a broadcast set up at Het Nieuwe Instituut visitors can watch the speakers from the other three locations (Waag, Impakt and MU).

The Hmm @ 4 locations
In 1964, Marshall McLuhan wrote about the concept of the global village and that "we have extended our central nervous system itself in a global embrace, abolishing both space and time as far as our planet is concerned." Almost sixty years later we are still asking how different forms of media can bring us together across time and space, and during this evening we want to explore just that.
The idea for this hybrid format emerged during a conversation between The Hmm and live-ness researcher Esther Hammelburg, who questions the importance of being together in one place in order to create a sense of togetherness.
