High Fashion in Equations

Eighteen haute couture designs from the 1950s and '60s come to life in a virtual fashion show in the Project Space. The University of Geneva's MIRALab research centre has created an animation based on designs by Marc Bohan, Serge Guérin and Hubert de Givenchy. The designers are linked by their experience assisting the Swiss couturier Robert Piguet (1898-1953).

MIRALab has become known internationally for its computer simulations of the human body in motion. Its Fashionizer software can produce a digital simulation of a piece of clothing from a simple sketch by combining mathematics with fashion and graphic components. _Fashionizer _allows designers to evaluate a dress's quality in 3D without actually producing the garment. It also makes it possible to place virtual versions of fragile museum pieces on public display.

The animation is on view in conjunction with Re-Source: Fashion Heritage in the Digital Age, taking place on 20 June at the Gelders Archief in Arnhem. The conference is organised by Stichting Modekern in partnership with Het Nieuwe Instituut. Scheduled speakers include professor Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann, the director of MIRALab.

For conference details and tickets, see www.modekern.nl. A report will be published on www.modekern.nl after the event.
