Herman Hertzberger
On Thursday 9 October architect Herman Hertzberger (Amsterdam, 1932) will hold a lecture at Het Nieuwe Instituut entitled Structuralism past and present, in which he looks back at the aspirations and inspirations behind his oeuvre. What drives Hertzberger after all these years to still be as enthusiastically involved with architecture? And what advice does he have for prospective architects?

This lecture forms part of the discursive programme that accompanies the double exhibition Structuralism, on show until 11 January 2015 at Het Nieuwe Instituut. Structuralism constitutes the most important contribution of the Netherlands to the modern architecture of the second half of the twentieth century. Herman Hertzberger, regarded as one of the best-known representatives of structuralism, recently entrusted a major portion of his archive to Het Nieuwe Instituut. As curator of the exhibition Making space, leaving space, Hertzberger has drawn on this extensive collection of models, sketches, designs and personal notebooks. Through his work he has made a major contribution to modern architecture in the Netherlands. Right up to this day, Architectuurstudio HH is responsible for the design of schools, offices, housing and theatres, such as the recently reopened TivoliVredenburg music centre. But it is not the building itself that interests him most. For Hertzberger, architecture is primarily a means of making space for interaction and collectivity.
