Hello PLASTIC
23 October 2014 20:00 - 22:00
An evening about the historical origin and cultural significance of plastic, and an inspiring glimpse into the future.
Once seen as the material of the future, plastic in recent decades has come to stand for increasing environmental pollution and blind consumer excess. But where would we be without computers, pacemakers, sneakers and chewing gum? (Plastic in chewing gum? Yes!) Plastic is truly everywhere. The evening's main speaker is Susan Freinkel, author of the revealing book 'Plastic, A Toxic Love Story'. A number of designers and researchers will also show inspiring examples of possible futures for plastic. Guests include: Maurizio Montalti, Perpetual Plastic Project, Michiel van der Kley from Project Egg, Tom van Aken from Avantium en Tal Erez.
'Hello PLASTIC' is the kick-off event for the exhibition 'PLASTIC, Promises of a home-made future' , on display at Het Nieuwe Instituut from 16 January to 5 April 2015. 'PLASTIC' is part of a series about materials and their economic, cultural and social importance. The project shows how the pursuit of innovation is accompanied by conflicting interests -- a theme that runs as a leitmotiv through the programming at Het Nieuwe Instituut.
