With the screening of Gas Leaks, producer, designer and Workspacer Manuel Toledo curates a film night especially for Thursday Night Live! From his fascination with architecture, culture and the creative industries, Toledo has established two international architecture film festivals in Santiago, Chile and London, UK. 'Gas Leaks' (2015) will have its Dutch premiere at Het Nieuwe Instituut. With an introduction by Daniela Vicherat-Mattar.

Chile, 1972. The building in which the Third Session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD III) would convene was built in the record time of 275 days during Salvador Allende's government. 'Gas Leaks' (Bruno Salas, 2014) delves into the convergence of the 34 artists convoked to integrate their art into the building's architecture, and what would become of these pieces in the context of Chilean history.

Manuel Toledo is a producer and independent designer who graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. He has worked as a designer for institutions such as TU Delft, developing sustainable houses in The Netherlands, and for Urban-Think Tank (U-TT) in Zurich and Caracas on architectural projects in India and the Netherlands. Since 2012 he has co-organised the ArqFilmFest in Santiago, Chile - the first architecture film festival in Latin America, now in its fourth successful edition having grown with each iteration. Following his experiences in Santiago, Toledo founded ArchFilmFest London, launching its first edition in June 2017. In Rotterdam, as President of the Encuentros 2015 Conference, he enabled the gathering of the largest international network of Chilean researchers, entrepreneurs and professionals working abroad to discuss the sustainable future of Chile.

Daniela Vicherat-Mattar is a Chilean sociologist working at Leiden University College The Hague. In her research she has explored the connection between public spaces, art and the ordinary experience of politics. One of her most recent projects compares the active street art scenes in Santiago and Cape Town, in relation to the rise of gentrification in both cities, and the role of art in contesting political power.
