Futures of Spatial Design

There’s a renewed interest in spatial design as a task that touches various current social and environmental issues. In a joint exploration of the potential role of spatial designers in the Netherlands, the Nieuwe Instituut, Board of Government Advisors (CRa), Platform Ontwerp NL and the Deltametropolis Association invite designers of all generations to explore this topic together. They will exchange ideas with other experts from within and outside the design field, including scientists, policy makers and citizens. With contributions from Gido ten Dolle, Jannemarie de Jonge (Board of Government Advisors) and Paul Gerretsen (Deltametropolis Association), among others.

Designing the Netherlands. 100 Years of Past & Present Futures. Photo: Aad Hoogendoorn.

Spatial planning in the Netherlands is back on the drawing boards of governments and designers. They are trying to find answers to the major social and environmental challenges that affect us all, such as the climate crisis, housing, the energy transition and social justice. But what exactly is the role of the designer? How do we work on the Netherlands of the future? What tools, skills and mindsets do we need? How have design attitudes evolved? And how can we work together to prepare for the future?

The programme is inspired by Designing the Netherlands: 100 Years of Past & Present Futures. This exhibition, which can be seen at the Nieuwe Instituut until 2 June 2024, explores a long and influential tradition in spatial design. During the evening, speakers and audience members will discuss the role of designers then, now and in the future, and, through moderated conversations in the exhibition space, may answer questions about how designers are equipped to deal with complex spatial, environmental and social issues, and what we can learn from the past and present to design the Netherlands of the future.

Programme and workshop

This public evening event concludes the programme, which included a workshop. The critical reflections and results of this workshop will be shared during the evening.

The programme is part of the New European Bauhaus, the EU festival that links the objectives of the European Green Deal to our everyday living environment. It calls on all European citizens to help build a sustainable, inclusive and beautiful future.
