Fungi Tools

Have you always wanted to know how to identify different types of mushroom? Or how to tell the difference between those that are safe to eat, and those that are poisonous? If you would like to learn all about morphology and shape groups, this workshop is for you! Saskia Boer of Outsiders Foraging is organising a hands-on identification session to celebrate the exhibition FUNGI: Anarchist Designers.

We will start with a short talk on the external characteristics and other identifying features of mushrooms. After that, you will practise identifying mushrooms yourself. Equipped with your newfound knowledge, you will look at your surroundings with fresh eyes, full of wonder and respect for the fascinating fungal kingdom.

What to bring:

  • Photos of one or more mushrooms that you would like to identify. Make sure you take three different views: the top, sides and bottom of the mushroom, so that the colour of the cap, stem and gills or tubes are clearly visible.
  • Do you have a magnifying glass or even a microscope with a minimum magnification of 1000x at home ? Be sure to bring it.
  • Don’t forget to bring a notebook to record your observations.

This activity is suitable for beginner mushroom enthusiasts. Experienced mycologists may not learn anything new, but they are welcome to share their insights and, of course, join us in identifying fungi.

FUNGI: Anarchist Designers

In the world of design and architecture, fungi are being embraced as a trendy new material. The exhibition FUNGI: Anarchist Designers, curated by anthropologist Anna Tsing and architect and artist Feifei Zhou (terriStories), offers a counterbalance to this human-centric approach. It presents fungi as independent entities that create a unique, multi-species world flourishing on the ruins of capitalism.
