Fantasies On How To Strike
4 July 2019 19:30 - 21:00
Fantasies On How To Strike is a short film on precarious labour that closely observes museum attendants in a Dutch museum. The film is based on a two-year research project on precarious labour in the Netherlands, and straddles the boundary between documentary and fiction.
As part of Het Nieuwe Instituut's Burn-out programme, the film looks at the (im)possibility of striking in times of precarious labour and unemployment. When no one even dares to call in sick, how will we be able to strike? With filmmaker Lisette Olsthoorn, sociologist Marguerite van den Berg and museum attendants.
Marguerite van den Berg
Marguerite van den Berg is associate professor of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam and director of the Master Sociology. In Spring 2019 she is an embedded researcher at Het Nieuwe Instituut. She is interested in the urban, gender and work. In particular, her current work focuses on precarization and precarity, especially as seen through the lens of aesthetics in her project Dress Work. In Spring 2017 she published _Gender in the Post-Fordist Urban - The Gender Revolution in Planning and Public Policy_ (Palgrave Macmillan 2017).
Lisette Olsthoorn
Lisette Olsthoorn makes both narrative and conceptual films. Her work concerns the margins of everyday life: what happens in between. Her projects have a clear focus on easily overlooked human gestures. These gestures are rendered visible by staging and sometimes repeating them. Her most recent project Fantasies On How To Strike (2019, 16') is research based and combines both her conceptual and her narrative working method. She graduated from the Amsterdam-based Gerrit Rietveld Academy and Dutch Film Academy.
