In the Netherlands, there are 10,000 'experimental' houses, thanks to the unique housing policy of the 1970s. From 1968, an experimental programme was responsible for housing renewal and urban regeneration, in reaction to the monotonous residential districts of the 1950s and 1960s.

The book Experimentele Woningbouw in Nederland 1968-1980 (Experimental Housing in the Netherlands, 1968-1980) is based on research conducted by the authors, Marcel Barzilay and Ruben Ferwerda, adapted from an earlier report made in collaboration with Anita Blom of the Cultural Heritage Agency as part of the Post '65 programme. The publication shows all 64 experimental projects, spread all over the Netherlands, that were built between 1968 and 1980 - offering potential inspiration for contemporary housing challenges. Some are well-known, such as Kasbah in Hengelo and the Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen) in Helmond, but there are also unknown gems, such as De Bergen in Capelle aan den IJssel, and the Wandelstraat in Woerden.
