Dean Bowen - Poetry from a speculative archive
The poet Dean Bowen is interested in the reproduction of memories, or what amounts to telling ourselves fictional stories. We believe that we can clearly recall something that has never happened to us. We reproduce the stories of parents, uncles, aunts or grandparents as though we have retained them all in the same way and recount experiences as shared even though we have never been a part of them ourselves. How do we carry this archive of memories around with us? How much is fiction, and how can this fiction be deployed as a strategy to communicate about our inner world? Take part in an exercise in unoriginal writing with Dean Bowen in order to become dishonest, perhaps in a slightly more honest way.

Dean Bowen
Dean Bowen (1984) is a poet and performer. He has published in Samplekanon, Hard/Hoofd, nY and Kunsttijdschrift Vlaanderen, and has secured a reputation on many platforms at home and abroad for his highly inspired delivery. In 2015 he won the Van Dale SPOKEN Award in the poetry category, and in 2018 his début Bokman earned him a nomination for the C. Buddingh Award. As a writer he is primarily concerned with investigating the dynamics of the composite identity and its relation to political and social positioning. To this end he uses the poem as an instrument and a democratic space to capture that plurality of voices.
