The Future of the Expo Model

11 June 2015 20:00 - 22:00

Video Future of Expo model 11 June 2015. Lectures by Paul Greenhalgh, Erick van Egeraat and four teams of design students.

A lecture on the cultural significance and recent developments of the World Expo, a presentation on the concepts and scenarios for Rotterdam2025, and short presentations of design concepts by participants of Rotterdam2025 provided the material for a debate on the future of the Expo model.

Central to this evening were the ideas of Rotterdam2025 to bring the World Expo to the harbour area of Rotterdam in 2025.

A circular economy is aimed at maximising the reusability of products and raw materials, while minimising value destruction. How would the model of the World Expo, with its emphasis on national representation and architectural spectacle, operate within a reused urban landscape? And which cultural imagination would fit in with a circular economy? What cultural imagination fits in with a circular economy? And how can a World Expo create long-term value?

Programme

  • Cultural historian Paul Greenhalgh, writer of the fantastic classic work Fair World, on the cultural significance of the World Expo and the recent developments in that model.

  • Architect Erick van Egeraat, on the concepts and scenarios of Rotterdam2025.

  • 4 teams of design students with the results of the design workshop for Rotterdam2025.

  • Moderated debate on the future of the Expo model.
