Coiling
The distinction between traditional weaving and other forms of working with textiles has become blurred. What has not changed is the simplicity: all you need for weaving are your own hands and a few basic materials. Coiling is an old weaving technique that offers scope for experimentation with materials, forms and colours. Participants learn the basics of coiling coached by basketry artist Esmé Hofman. Taking examples from Esmé's collection as their model, participants get down to work on a small basket or a freer form. They can bring their own material with them to work with or to experiment: vegetable materials like straw, grasses and bark, but also textile threads or unprocessed wool, synthetics or metal wire (optional).
