Capture / Display
What happens when master's students from Sandberg Instituut spend an intensive week in close contact with the collection and spaces of Het Nieuwe Instituut? 'Capture / Display 'is a workshop run by Paolo Patelli and a pop-up exhibition by graduate students from the Studio for Immediate Spaces programme.

The aim of Capture / Display is to produce a pop-up exhibition as a critical documentary, exposing modes of operating on the collection works -- copying, enlarging, displacing, recontextualising, deleting, editing, reclassifying, translating, publishing, displaying, hiding and embedding them. The students will each identify one key work from the drawings, photographs and models belonging to the National Collection for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning. Starting from what the works show, the students will then consider how the works appear, how they are stored, who collected them and why they were kept and preserved. Secondly, they will mobilise the documents, considering what they want the documents to do differently, how and why.
Using the archive is not a neutral but a creative act with an aesthetic intention, an audience and a purpose. The exhibition is the means to select, present, create new adjacencies, allowing for new types of knowledge circulation.
Studio for Immediate Spaces
Studio for Immediate Spaces is a two-year master's programme on space-related practices at Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam. Questions of politics, ecology, society, technology and economy manifest in space. How they play out in reality also defines different possibilities of how to come together, how to manage work, leisure, resources and commons in a time of ecological collapse and social divide. Through site-specific works, location-based installations, situated research and context-driven scenography, the course participants explore spatially engaging strategies beyond disciplinary boundaries.
