Book Launch! (w)Ego with Winy Maas

During Rotterdam Architecture Month, The Why Factory (T?F), the joint think tank and research and educational institution of Delft University of Technology and architectural firm MVRDV, is celebrating the publication of the research institute's latest publication with a lecture by founder Winy Maas. On The Podium, designed by MVRDV and with the best imaginable view of 'his' Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, Maas will discuss themes from the book ('w)Ego'. How do we develop the city of the future based on both individual imagination and collective interests?

The new book_ (w)Ego_ is about the possibilities and freedom to design and build the house of our dreams in densely populated cities. It is an exploration of design processes based on desires, in which the wishes of residents are paramount in the construction and renovation of their homes and the city itself. In a densely populated and built-up world, the practicality of the individual imagination increases when we talk about it with neighbours and our environment. Freedom and imagination meet responsibility and cooperation. In short, Ego becomes (w)Ego. The book suggests a shift from suspicion to curiosity, from rigidity to adaptability, from selfishness to (w)egoism. In this way, (w)Ego pushes the boundaries of residential architecture and looks for alternative ways to live together in the midst of density.

"With (w)EGO: Tailor-Made Housing, The Why Factory investigates the participatory processes that play a role in the design of homes. These processes mediate between the wishes of each of the residents of a residential block and partly determine the design of their apartments. To achieve this goal, (w)EGO explores the possibilities of a particular game process. This game takes advantage of the specificities of each resident and transforms them into spatial needs. In this way, unexpected housing typologies arise within a real people-oriented residential building.."

_(w)Ego _is the 13th title in The Why Factory's Future Cities series. The other books can be found on the T?F-website. (w)Ego is available from NAi Booksellers.
