Book Presentation: Building Narratives

Building Narratives is a book that explores how stories can influence design. It provides insight into the processes, decisions and conversations that give rise to buildings. It was created by Kees Kaan, Manuela Triggianese, Yagiz Soylev and Alice Colombo, in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture at TU Delft and KAAN Architecten.

Projects evolve over several years, influenced by a changing landscape of collaborations between clients, institutions, engineers and regulators. Designing under such circumstances requires maintaining coherence within an ever-changing process.

This book examines how design communication functions in this context. A narrative holds a project together by making collaboration between diverse disciplines, procurement phases and stakeholders transparent and coherent. Architecture is considered a form of collective intelligence.

Programme

The evening is divided into three parts. First, we will hear a guest lecture that contextualises the publication within architectural culture and practice more broadly. Next, there will be an introduction to Building Narratives, during which the team will explain the conversations, case studies and editorial structure of the book. Finally, there will be a discussion that further explores architecture as a form of collective intelligence.

Speakers are Manuela Triggianese, Salomon Frausto, Yagiz Söylev, Alice Colombo and Kees Kaan. Roundtable guests are Jan Nauta, Hrvoje Šmidihen, Sofie De Caigny and Janna Bystrykh. Moderator is Georg Vrachliotis.
