Atlas of the Functional City

On 28 October, Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Jaap Bakema Study Centre organised in cooperation with the Van Eesteren-Fluck & Van Lohuizen Foundation (EFL) and the Archives of the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta) at the ETH Zurich a symposium on the occasion of the publication of the Atlas of the Functional City. This book presents the results of research into the comparative city analysis and maps exhibited at the fourth CIAM congress in 1933.

28 October 2014 14:00 - 19:00

The publication Atlas of the Functional City. CIAM 4 and Comparative Urban Analysis is the result of an extensive international research project. The research project is the first to systematically review and broadly contextualize the 34 elaborate analyses of urban data made especially for CIAM 4 in 1933. These city analyses, which are kept in gta Archives in Zurich served as primary source material.

The research project concentrates on the methods of comparative urban analysis and mapping as modern ideas and tools for understanding the city. The acquired insights at the time relate to contemporary mapping practices and are therefore still relevant. In the context of the challenges cities and urban planners face today, the city analyses are a rich source of inspiration for contemporary comparative urban analysis. This symposium aims to stress the importance of archival material as an instrument in knowledge production.

The event was a joint initiative of the Van Eesteren-Fluck & Van Lohuizen Foundation (EFL Foundation), the Archives of the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta Archives) at ETH Zurich.
