Archive Live! #3: Exceptionally Safe!

Who decides what is safe, and who are our cities actually designed for? In this edition of Archive Live!, we will explore how we can improve the design of our public spaces with the help of urban makers, designers and social workers. The National Collection serves as a source of inspiration: how has social safety been considered in the past?

During the last local elections, safety was a major issue everywhere. In the 1980s, when local activism and political change went hand in hand, ideas emerged that are relevant again today. Examples can be found in the Vrouwen Bouwen Wonen (Women Building Housing) archive. Active from 1983, this network of women architects, sociologists and urban planners published a study on social safety in the city at the Buiten Gewoon Veilig (Exceptionally Safe) conference in 1987.

Tonight, together with our guests, we will explore what public spaces could look like if we prioritised the needs and social safety of women, young people and migrants.
