Nieuwe Instituut x RAW Material Company: Archipelagoes of Bond
Nieuwe Instituut and Dakar-based RAW Material Company present Archipelagoes of Bond, a public programme around the work of Rotterdam-based filmmaker and researcher Janilda Bartolomeu, taking place in the Senegalese capital on 22 May. The evening will consist of a series of short films by Bartolomeu, followed by a panel discussion between Janilda, Nieuwe Instituut researcher Ramon Amaro and Zineb Seghrouchni, founder DAR Cultural Agency.

Janilda's initial research brought her to trace the under-documented history of the Cape Verdean diaspora, prompting her to further explore silent narratives. Janilda Bartolomeu's collaboration with RAW Material company, pursued in depth during a research residency in 2025, deepens this question of the transmission of community identity and sense of belonging across borders.
One of Janilda Bartollomeu's films that are screened, The Eleventh Island: Activating Silent Histories through Video (2020), tells the largely undocumented history of the connection between Cape Verde and Rotterdam. In the Senegalese context, a welcoming ground for Cape Verdeans, she draws on the echoes of families, their history and their evolution.
The evening takes place in Cinéma Empire in Dakar, Senegal and is free to attend. No registration is required.
RAW Route
Archipelagoes of Bond is part of RAW Route, a programme by RAW Material Company that consists of an exhibition, a series of conversations, a book fair and other events. RAW Route takes place in Dakar in May, a vibrant month during which many of Dakar’s cultural organisations and institutions are hosting a wide range of over 150 events. The contribution of the Nieuwe Instituut, which is a collaboration with RAW Material Company, is made possible with support from the Dutch embassy in Senegal.
