2020 AD

With his '2020 AD' installation, artist Boris van Hoof tries to capture the emotions of the pandemic in an artwork. The visitor is invited to carefully manoeuver past rows of ceramic amphoras balancing on their narrow bases. These vessels symbolise the precarious balance in which global society now finds itself. The physical distance from each other is fixed at 1.5 metres; personal and economic well-being are in a fragile equilibrium.

The amphoras reference archaeological finds from past civilisations. They are produced using moulds however, a nod to our own time and the dream of infinite productivity and growth. Each amphora is stamped with the numbers 31-12-2019: the date when the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission first reported cases of pneumonia of an unknown origin. The cause was later identified as the Covid-19 virus in January 2020.
