1:1 Symposium 1:1 Symposium

In the spring of 2015 Het Nieuwe Instituut organised a programme of events focusing on museum presentation models, in conjunction with the installation 1:1 Period Rooms. The concluding event was _1:1 Symposium, _in which we broadened our consideration to the significance of representation in general and 1:1 models in particular.

The Greek architect and artist Andreas Angelidakis has designed an installation for 1:1 Period Rooms using rooms from the Amsterdam Museum's collection that have not been displayed publicly since the 1970s. In the exhibition - one in a series of three devoted to interiors - Het Nieuwe Instituut investigates the significance of representation in general and 1:1 models in particular. The period room is a 1:1 model that was transferred from the private environment to the museum setting. Period rooms evoked a particular world, style or atmosphere for the sake of providing the visitor with an experience. Space and art merged in an intensification of reality that also had an alienating effect on the visitor.

1:1 models are enjoying a notable revival, not only in a contemporary form but also in a historical one. Where does this interest come from? To what degree is the 1:1 model - an environment as recognisable as it is alienating - capable of seducing an audience into entering into a relationship with a story or a topic? And which tools does it offer the exhibition curator?

The programme combined inspiring theoretical lectures and case studies from different fields, presented by an international array of speakers:

• Patrick Healy (senior researcher, Delft School of Design, Delft University of Technology), whose book The Model and Its Architecture (2008) explores the relationship between knowledge and models in scientific and architectural discourse;
• Kate Goodwin (curator, Royal Academy of Arts, London), who for the exhibition Sensing Spaces asked architects to reawaken visitors' sensibilities to the spaces around them using 1:1 installations;
• Savvas Ciriacidis (curator, German Pavilion, 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale), who installed a 1:1 model of the German chancellor's bungalow in a pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale;
• Tina di Carlo (former curator, Museum of Modern Art, New York; PhD candidate in the Department of Form, Theory and History at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design), who researches processes of displacement in relation to collection, preservation and exhibition practices;
• Marc Holthof (artcritic), who will talk about the work of the Belgian artist Guillaume Bijl, known for 1:1 scale installations of hairdressing salons, billiard halls, driving schools and shopping malls;
• novelist and critic Matthew Stadler, who will give a presentation on the intervention of Inside Outside / Petra Blaisse in Sonneveld House;
• Andreas Angelidakis (architect and visual artist), who designed 1:1 Period Rooms, an installation drawing on period rooms from the Amsterdam Museum's collection, for Het Nieuwe Instituut; and
• Guus Beumer (director, Het Nieuwe Instituut);
• The symposium is moderated by Huib Haye van der Werf (partner / curator TAAK and head artistic programme Jan van Eyck Academy).

The symposium ended with a dinner catered by MESS (http://www.makeamess.nl/).
