Temporary Fashion Museum in Het Nieuwe Instituut’s Thursday Night programme
From 13 September 2015 to 8 May 2016 Het Nieuwe Instituut is transforming itself into a Temporary Fashion Museum. During this period the Thursday Night lecture programme will deal mainly with fashion-related subjects.
24 July 2015
Until the 1990s the fashion industry was driven by the creative urge to present a radical new image each season. Today fashion has been transformed into a finance-driven system designed to ensure brand continuity. The growing momentum of the fashion industry has led to a disposable culture that is having a negative impact on the environment and on society. But is this really the whole story? Independent-minded designers and entrepreneurs, conscious consumers and technological developments are spearheading a revolt. Fashion is dead, long live fashion!
The Thursday Night programme offers a podium for debate about and reflection on the nature of fashion and how it is seeking new values in response to the developments outlined above. Subjects of discussion will include the influence of technology on the body, new business models, gender issues, new production methods and technologies, circular thinking, fashion criticism, fashion as image and fashion as social catalyst.
This kaleidoscopic programme is being produced in partnership with fashion school, researchers, designers, makers and various fashion organisations and networks. The results will be published in the online dossier.
