Open Archief Essay Collection on the Creative Reuse of Archives
Open Archief has published a collection of essays exploring the creative possibilities of archival material. In 12 essays, Open Archief – Artistic Reuse of Archives explores how artists interpret archives, the ethical issues surrounding reuse, and the dynamics between archives and users. The collection is available in print and can also be read online.

Open Archief – Artistic Reuse of Archives follows three editions of the Open Archief programme (2019-2022). In this project, the Nieuwe Instituut, Sound & Vision and, later, the International Institute of Social History, invited artists to creatively reuse heritage archives and collections.
The essays, written by former participants, researchers and heritage professionals, show how archives can inspire reuse and co-creation. Open Archief not only focuses on the heritage sector, but also aims to inspire a wide audience of art and archive enthusiasts to work actively with archival material.
