Het Nieuwe Instituut during Salone del Mobile 2019
Het Nieuwe Instituut stages two presentations during the international design week from 9 to 14 April 2019 in Milan, that both focus on design research. _I See That I See What You Don't See _is the official Dutch contribution to the XXII Triennale di Milano, and the New Material Award presents innovative material research at Alcova.

I See That I See What You Don't See
The Dutch pavilion responds to the overarching theme of the triennial with a presentation about our relationship with darkness. The natural distinction between day and night, between the periods of work and rest, are no longer self-evident. Our world is always 'on', and the simple experience of a clear starry sky has become a rarity, with the Netherlands now known to be one of the most illuminated countries on the planet. How do we approach this phenomenon? What responsibility and mandate does the designer have, and what options are there for a critical response?
_I See That I See What You Don't See_ has been compiled by Angela Rui (independent curator and researcher) in collaboration with Marina Otero Verzier (director of research, Het Nieuwe Instituut) and Francien van Westrenen (head of agency, Het Nieuwe Instituut).
Designers: Academy for Urban Astronauts, Ramon Amaro, Danilo Correale, Design Academy Eindhoven, Research and Heritage departments, Het Nieuwe Instituut, Lucy McRae, Melvin Moti, Bregtje van der Haak, Pascal van Hulst & Oscar Peña, Richard Vijgen and Leanne Wijnsma.
New Material Award
The New Material Award focuses on innovative material research at the interface of science, design, art, and technology. Across the boundaries of their own field of expertise, nominated visual artists, designers and architects contribute to the development of new materials. Ceramics, building materials, metals and textiles are developed based on existing and unusual raw materials such as cow's blood, algae, waste metal, and borrowed material.
With its public presentations the New Material Award offers a platform to a generation of designers who dare to ask fundamental questions about industrial production processes and natural growth, waste flows and residual materials. The winners of the New Material Award 2018 are Studio Klarenbeek and Dros, in collaboration with Atelier LUMA, with Algae Lab Luma. The project investigated whether algae can form the raw material for the large-scale production of biopolymers, a sustainable alternative to the production of plastics from oil. The winner of the New Material Fellow 2018 is Basse Stittgen who went in search of possible applications for cow's blood in the project Blood Related.
Designers: Agne Kucerenkaite, Alexander Marinus, Basse Stittgen, Daria Biryukova, Envisions, Inge Sluijs, Iris de Kievith and Annemarie Piscaer, Ekatarina Semenova, Studio Klarenbeek and Dros in collaboration with Atelier Luma , Overtreders W & Bureau SLA, Sanne Visser, Shahar Livne, Studio Chris Kabel, Telesilla Bristogianni and Faidra Oikonomopoulou, and Xandra van der Eijk.
The New Material Award is a collaboration between Stichting Doen, Fonds Kwadraatand Het Nieuwe Instituut.
