Nieuwe Instituut announces the long-term display ‘Dutch, More or Less: Contemporary Architecture, Design and Digital Culture’
Nieuwe Instituut announces the long-term display Dutch, More or Less: Contemporary Architecture, Design and Digital Culture. This new, long-term evolving exhibition celebrates the diversity of Dutch design within the three design disciplines represented by the Nieuwe Instituut.
2 April 2024
- From 1 June 2024, Dutch, More or Less: Contemporary Architecture, Design and Digital Culture can be seen at the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam.
- This idiosyncratic display on more than 30 years of Dutch design is dedicated to all three disciplines on which the Nieuwe Instituut focuses: architecture, design and digital culture.
- Dutch, More or Less does not tell “the” story of Dutch design, but celebrates its diversity.
- The display is long-term and will be on display at the Nieuwe Instituut for two years.
Since the 1990s, the term “Dutch design” has been consciously used as a means of putting the Dutch brand on the map and on the market in an increasingly globalising world. At the same time, many Dutch designers have established themselves at the global forefront of the various design disciplines. What distinguishes their work from that of their counterparts elsewhere in the world, and how has the characterisation of “more or less Dutch” evolved over time?
3 disciplines
The long-running display Dutch, More or Less: Contemporary Architecture, Design and Digital Culture focuses on how the spaces, objects and interactions within the three disciplines represented by the Nieuwe Instituut reflect the cultural, social, political, technological and ecological developments of the past 30 years.
Thematic layout
Architecture, design and digital culture are not shown separately, but grouped together according to different themes, ideas, issues and new ways of thinking, creating a striking overview of how Dutch design is exemplary for the convergence and interaction of the design disciplines.
Pioneers, outsiders, and new work
Among the more than 60 objects in Dutch, More or Less are, of course, works by well-known pioneers including architecture offices like OMA and MVRDV, designers like Hella Jongerius en Viktor&Rolf, and digital initiatives like De Digitale Stad (the Digital City) and Mediamatic. But unexpected outsiders are also represented, as well as new talents specially invited to preview the future of Dutch design.
