Some games are more fun when the rules are stretched. On the Deck, which was turned into an arcade hall, visitors were challenged to play games in a different way.

Tracking Traces - Museumpark Enlarged

The future of the Museumpark is in a state of flux. To grasp the subject, Het Nieuwe Instituut gave two teams of designers, artists, urban designers and storytellers a commission entitled Tracking Traces, asking them to come up with a new vision for this Rotterdam park. How could 'traces' of the park and those of surrounding cultural and medical institutes engage with one another in better ways?

Preview Lernert & Sander on Rath & Doodeheefver

The TV presenter Andrea van Pol will talk to the artist duo Lernert & Sander about their forthcoming installation and performance for Milan's Salone Internazionale del Mobile design fair. Commissioned by Het Nieuwe Instituut, the work takes inspiration from the historical collection of the wallpaper manufacturer Rath & Doodeheefver.

Het Nieuwe Instituut and The Berlage Center for Advanced Studies in Architecture and Urban Design organised a joint symposium on 20 March on the renewed attention for Gottfried Sempers' theory on Bekleidung.

Art and Innovation: The Future of Interdisciplinarity

Het Nieuwe Instituut and The Netherlands Study Centre for Technology Trends (STT) are organizing the joint symposium [Art and Innovation: The Future of Interdisciplinarity](http://stt.nl/afsluitend-symposium-kunst-techniek/#English) on 19 March. For STT, the symposium marks the end of a foresight study in which new relations between art, science and technology were explored. Het Nieuwe Instituut will adopt the findings of these explorations, and will apply them in the development of their practice-based research.

Museum Night Ready? Set, Go!

Specially for Museum Night, six life-size sets inspired by the exhibition 1:1 Sets for Erwin Olaf will be built beneath the arcade of Het Nieuwe Instituut. Each of the six sets presents a particular 'individual' in a specific world, and all sets are assembled from waste material, new material and renewed material.

Track Changes

The [Track Changes debate series](http://hetnieuweinstituut.nl/en/track-changes), which took place at the São Paulo Architecture Biennale in November 2013, came home to the Netherlands with an evening for the public.

Speaking Walls

If the walls could speak to us, what would they tell? What intimacies would they have witnessed? Rather than exploring the ability of walls to absorb and reproduce, Richard Harmanni discussed the physical aspects of what walls have to offer. Harmanni took us from the block-printing technique to the industrial revolution which made wallpapers available to the masses. We saw how new wallpaper is covered over the old, creating thick layers that offer a fascinating insight into changing tastes and fashions of past centuries. We discovered for instance that the first paper wallpaper wasn't actually used on a wall. 'Speaking Walls' revealed countless fascinating aspects of wallpaper, then and now.

Bekleidung und Entkleidung

Mark Pimlott's approach to the issue of Bekleidung challenges the exclusivity or intense personalization, or psychologizing, that has developed around it in discussions of the Interior: the claustrophobia that perhaps abounds in the stage sets and photographs of Erwin Olaf. He proposes, instead, to explore the effects of these contrived interior settings in relation to the effects of the world without, which bring them into being.

The Great Indoors

Het Nieuwe Instituut and Bureau Europa organised a joint symposium on 20 February in connection with The Great Indoors Award 2013: The Nature of Things. This symposium formed part of the programme running parallel to the exhibition 1:1 Sets for Erwin Olaf & Bekleidung, which was on display in Het Nieuwe Instituut until 30 March 2014.

The House Museum As Exposition Lab

Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Iconic Houses Network hosted an afternoon of talks on the opportunities and dilemmas of organising exhibitions in house museums. Henry Urbach, who has been the director of [The Glass House](http://theglasshouse.org/) (designed by architect Philip Johnson) since 2012, was invited for this. In a short space of time, he organised a series of exhibitions in and around the museum house.
