Collections of Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague featured on postage stamps celebrating 100 years of De Stijl

On 27 March 2017, as part of the celebrations of '100 Years of De Stijl: Mondrian to Dutch Design', the Dutch postal service is issuing ten De Stijl postage stamps in partnership with Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague.

The Future of Digital Sustainability

Paper is patient; bits and bytes, however, continually demand attention. For instance, the blue-prints of De Meerpaal in Dronten (Frank van Klingeren 1965-67) are stored at the State Archive for Architecture and Urban Planning. Researchers can request access to them, and are able to view the drawings on long, high tables. But how will we consult the oeuvre of an early 21st century architect fifty years from now? Will it be viewable at all?

Het Nieuwe Instituut supports campaign ‘Protect the European Union’

Het Nieuwe Instituut is proud to partner with German fine-art photographer Wolfgang Tillmans and Jop van Bennekom and Gert Jonkers, founders of Fantastic Man, for the Protect the European Union campaign, in collaboration with De Balie (Amsterdam), Cookies, Foam (Amsterdam) and Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (Rotterdam). The campaign's focus is the protection of the EU against the current wildfire of political negativity.

Architecture and Interiors. The desire for Style

The architecture and interiors of De Stijl are famous around the world. Dutch architects and designers like Gerrit Rietveld, Theo van Doesburg, Cornelis van Eesteren and J.J.P. Oud blazed the trail for generations of progressive thinkers who came after them. The historical roots of De Stijl are less well-known. From 10 June until 17 September, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and Het Nieuwe Instituut present a marvellous overview of drawings, architectural models and examples of furniture by members of the influential art movement.

Squatting: Archive acquisition Hein de Haan

In relation to its research into the Architecture of Appropriation, the institute has acquired the archive of Hein de Haan, an architect who worked closely with squatters and devoted his life to the preservation of the existing city, small-scale construction and mixed developments incorporating housing, workplaces and other amenities.

Het Nieuwe Instituut and 100 Years of De Stijl

To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of De Stijl, Het Nieuwe Instituut has formed partnerships with several other cultural institutions, including a co-production with the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. The State Archive for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning is lending hundreds of works to various exhibitions being staged to mark the centenary of De Stijl.

Reinier Kranendonk 'squats' Architecture of Appropriation

On 6 February 2017 artist Reinier Kranendonk took over part of the exhibition space of _Architecture of Appropriation_ on the third floor of Het Nieuwe Institute with Todopia, the semi-mobile living / workspace he designed and that was on display in the institute's foyer the previous week. Kranendonk issued a written statement to explain his motivation, commenting that it would be in keeping with the spirit of _Architecture of Appropriation_ to move Todopia within the exhibition itself.
